Autism Yukon

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is neurological in nature and affects the brain in four major areas:
1. Language/communication
2. Social skills
3. Sensory systems
4. Behaviour
The cause remains a mystery but may be triggered by a combination of genetics and environmental insults. Autism is a spectrum with varying amounts of “severity.” A combination of therapies that address the four major areas is considered to be best practice treatment.
One type of treatment that addresses the sensory systems is Snoezlen Therapy. Snoezelen therapy, or controlled multisensory environment (MSE), is a therapy for people with autism and other developmental disabilities, dementia or brain injury. It consists of placing the person in a soothing and stimulating environment, called the "Snoezelen room." A trained therapist helps the individual to incorporate this sensory learning and to be able to generalize it to other parts of his or her life. There is no Snoezlen Room currently available to people on the Autism spectrum in the Yukon.
One in 88 children in Canada is born with Autism. This means that about 340 Yukoners probably have Autism. It is because of people like the community-minded employees of Northwestel, that we can accomplish our mission of improving the quality of life for those affected by Autism in the Yukon!
