How does business get behind GivingTuesday?

From small local retailers to giant multi-national brands, businesses are getting behind GivingTuesday in Canada and around the world. Check out some examples of great GivingTuesday activities:

Sobeys

Sobey’s

Sobey’s teamed up with Feed Nova Scotia, offering a matching program for donations received on GivingTuesday. Feed Nova Scotia received 20 times more donations compared to a typical day in December, raising a total of more than $100,000 on GivingTuesday. As a result they were able to distribute over 6,300 Christmas produce hampers, 4,400 turkeys, and 1,800 chickens to member food banks across the province during the holiday season.

Wilsons

Wilson's Home Heating

In Halifax Wilson's created street teams that collected hugs throughout the day on GivingTuesday. For each hug Wilson's donated $10 to one of three local charities chosen by the person giving the hug. The activity was very engaging for the public, attracted great media attention and raised $1,100 for the charities.

CIBC

CIBC launched a one-day Twitter campaign on GivingTuesday to drive awareness and donations to CIBC Children’s Foundation with the help of retweets. For every retweet of CIBC’s #GivingTuesdayCA tweet, CIBC donated $1, up to a maximum of $10,000. The maximum donation was reached. 

The Fireplace Centre 

In Ottawa, The Fireplace Centre and Patio Shop offered a matching gift (up to $10,000) for all donations to United Way Ottawa on GivingTuesday, helping the chapter toward it's annual campaign goal in the final days.

Viatec Food Bank Challenge

In Victoria, Viatec used GivingTuesday to amplify its Food Bank Challenge in support of the Mustard Seed. The challenge united technology companies all over the city to bring in a total of $128,320.88 for the Mustard Seed.

Interac

Interac (Acxsys Corp.) matched online charitable donations on GivingTuesday made through givingtuesday.ca - CanadaHelps.org and paid using Interac Online (up to a maximum of $10,000). The maximum donation was reached before 6pm on GivingTuesday.

North York Chrysler

On GivingTuesday North Your Chrysler announced their largest ever charity initiative. Through and online vote, passionate customers, staff and community members helped choose two charities to receive a total of $25,000 in donations. The poll collected 2,838 votes, which determined The Redwood Women's Shelter ($15,000) and Participation House Markham ($10,000) to receive the donations in early January.

Tim Hortons

Tim Hortons randomly issued $5 gift cards for GivingTuesday. The cards were given out at restaurants coast-to-coast in recognition and celebration of good deeds done by their customers.

Ipsos

GivingTuesday founding parter Ipsos Canada celebrated GivingTuesday with a corporate volunteering initiative. Staff in Ipsos offices across Canada picked a local organization and organized teams to go and help out on GivingTuesday. In Montreal, employees were put to work at the thrift shop of the Welcome Hall Mission.

PayPal

In December, PayPal matched 1% of donations made to any registered charity through CanadaHelps when using a PayPal account. All donations in the month of December made through CanadaHelps or givingtuesday.ca (powered by CanadaHelps) were eligible for the 1% match.

Canadian Tire

Canadian Tire created a special Holiday E-Card in celebration of GivingTuesday and Jumpstart to help start spreading holiday cheer to friends and family.

Tim Horton’s

Tim Horton’s, a founding partner of GivingTuesday, ran in store menu board videos to raise awareness and encouraged online and in-store donations for the Tim Horton Children's Foundation for disadvantaged children.

Greedy Giver

This crowdfunding social enterprise handed out 1000 loonies in Toronto streets with the simple instructions to “Use This Coin For Good”.

Deloitte

Alzeimers Society Nova Scotia received a matching donation from Deloitte for all individual donations on Tuesday, December 2, 2013 and exceeded their goals. In celebration of the day and partnership, Deloitte hosted a lunch and learn for their employees about dementia, a great example of partner engagement!

Sparkling Life Family Chiropractic, a small practice in Nelson, BC, offered free adjustments in exchange for food donations for The Nelson Food Cupboard. They also collected $200 in donations for Chiropractic for the World Foundation. The patients loved celebrating GivingTuesday!

Chez Leveque, an iconic Montreal restaurant, collected funds and made a matching donation to the Grande guignolée des Médias, as well as supporting GivingTuesday through awareness initiatives on website and social media.

US examples

American Eagle Outfitters

Following Cyber Monday, on #GivingTuesday American Eagle USA donated $1 for every transaction made on www.ae.com up to $50,000 for Teach for America. The company promoted this campaign on its social channels and reported that engagement on their #GivingTuesday tweet received higher traffic compared to their regular sales tweets sent between December 1st and December 6th.

AT&T

AT&T USA partnered with the Union Settlement Association to tweet stories and information about the Union Settlement Association’s work in New York’s East Harlem community. They launched their campaign 2 weeks before #GivingTuesday and donated a fixed amount for each re-tweet, up to $10,000.

Microsoft

Microsoft USA promoted #GivingTuesday across Microsoft platforms (Skype, etc) through a campaign that reached donors in-store and on-line. Microsoft Stores offered people who purchased Microsoft products a $25 donation gift card to give to any of Microsoft’s charitable partners. In addition, Microsoft’s YouthSpark initiative offered a $250,000 match on any donations given Microsoft charitable partners—a match that was met in less than 20 minutes on #GivingTuesday.

Bank of America

Bank of America organized a campaign to support (RED) in the fight to end AIDS by doubling each donation made on #GivingTuesday to the US Fund for the Global Fund, up to $2,000,000. This is part of the company’s $6,000,000 pledge to fund the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. 

CVS Health

For the second year, CVS Health USA recognized its colleagues’ spirit of volunteerism by inviting employees to nominate a charity in their local communities for which they volunteer for a grant from the CVS Health Foundation. In response to the overwhelming success of the 2013 #GivingTuesday campaign, in 2014, the foundation more than doubled its commitment and awarded a total of $100,000 to 50 organizations nationwide.

Google

On #GivingTuesday, Google USA took over #GivingTuesday’s Google+ page to host the first-ever donateable hangout-a-thon with Mashable. The hangout-a-thon was held from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. EST and invited nonprofits around the world to take part in the #GivingTuesday conversation. Google also promoted the hangout-a-thon with a direct link below Google’s homepage search bar.

H&M

Retailer H&M USA paid it forward on GivingTuesday by donating $7.5 Million of new apparel to help dress people in need during the holiday season. H&M also encouraged shoppers to give back through a customer register donation drive.

Discover

For the second year in a row, Discover USA offered a 2% match to donations to the company’s Cashback Bonus charitable partners. Discover also waived transaction fees for donations made with a Discover Card on #GivingTuesday and encouraged employees to participate in Discover’s Employee Giving Program by providing a $50 bonus match for donations and pledges made on #GivingTuesday.

The Home Depot

The Home Depot Foundation USA launched a month-long campaign on #GivingTuesday that invited people to tweet using #DoingMore4Vets to support US veterans. From December 2 - December 31, the Foundation donated $1 for each re-tweet to four of their nonprofit partners, up to $400,000 total or $100,000 per organization.

Visa

On #GivingTuesday  Visa USA donated $15 each time a donation was made to the American Red Cross using Visa Checkout (up to a total of $250,000).

Johnson & Johnson

J&J launched More Hands, More Hearts™ in the US and the UK with Jennifer Hudson and Save the Children. The program donated essential resources, including JOHNSON’S baby care kits and a special grant, to help moms ensure their babies thrive.
