GivingTuesday Victoria

AIDS Vancouver Island

Giving Tuesday lands on World AIDS Day this year!

December 1st is a big day for AIDS Vancouver Island (AVI)!

AVI celebrates its 30th Year Anniversary - in conjunction with Giving Tuesday, World AIDS Day, AIDS Awareness Week, and Aboriginal AIDS Awareness Week.

AVI will be hosting several events connected to these days to continue to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and its impacts; to remember, honour and celebrate those who we have lost due to HIV/AIDS; to reflect on what we have achieved – both locally and globally – in our efforts to counter the negative impacts of HIV/AIDS; and support education and prevention activities that seek to counter stigma and discrimination that target people who are living with, affected by or at-risk of HIV/AIDS.

AIDS Vancouver Island: Giving Tuesday/World AIDS Day Events

We will be holding a Candle Light Vigil outside the Legislature Building in Victoria, BC to raise awareness and show support for people living with HIV.

The Living Library is back with the “We Are Here” Story Boards (a display of story boards in public spaces and schools, created by people living with HIV/AIDS). This year will include poster boards from the point of view of those who choose not to disclose to the world. We wanted to do an ‘anonymous’ storyboard alongside those who share their positive stories, to make the point that unfortunately stigma and prejudice are still rife in our society and many remain hidden.

There will be a Free Hugs Flash Mob on a main street corner downtown. Volunteers, clients, and staff will hold simple placards (ex. "World AIDS Day - Free Hugs" "HIV+ hug me and I'll hug you back!" etc.) with anti-stigma (but not political) messages.

Please join us in celebration and remembrance. Give this Giving Tuesday to AIDS Vancouver Island.
