grunt gallery was formed in 1984 by a collective of eight artists working in a small storefront, and became a registered not-for-profit society in 1989. Today, grunt is one of about 160 permanent artist-run centres in Canada.
grunt is known for presenting a wide diversity of artists and approaches to art-making; with a special focus on the Aboriginal, Ethnic, and Queer community's art projects which are often overlooked by Vancouver’s conventional galleries.
grunt offers programming in four central streams: an Exhibition Series, a Media Arts program, Publishing in print and digital, and Special Projects in the community. We also have an extended presence online and in social media.
In 1995, grunt purchased its own unit in the Main Space building on East 2nd Avenue near Main Street. It was a move that challenged perceptions and expectations of us, but allowed us to raise the level of work we were doing.
grunt gallery has never participated in Giving Tuesday before. But this year, we are joining the movement to ask for your help with some critical renovations to our now 20 year old facility.
We need to install a new lighting grid, HVAC, archival storage cabinets, and technical equipment. These renovations are expected to cost over $30,000.
We have been awarded two grants to support this necessary work, but still need to raise about $10,000 more in order to complete the renovations.
