WP Puppet Theatre
WP Puppet Theatre is pleased to gift one complimentary 3 hour View from the Inside Workshop for Giving Tuesday as part of our GIVE BACK program. Will you help us give more? We would like to provide other non-profit and charitable organizations with a View from the Inside: Courage Journey Workshop (“Courage Journey Workshops”) series of 6-8 workshops at a subsidized rate or, even better, free of charge, and with your help we can do this. The Courage Journey Workshops is a puppetry based arts project exploring the experiences of Calgarians who struggle in different ways with mental wellness. Professional project leaders guide participants through an art making process where stories inspire the creation of mask - body puppets. Our current program consists of six to eight workshops exploring public me, private me, connect to me, and performing me. > Learn more about the workshops.
We launched this program in 2015/16 and delivered 16 workshops in total to four different organizations free of charge (4 sessions of 4 workshops each) for around 50 participants, which was made possible by a grant and the generous support of our donors. We were pleased to work with youth, adults, and seniors with the following organizations: the Boys & Girls Club's Circle of Supports program for Aboriginal youth, Studio C, Pathways to Housing, a project of The Alex, which supports homeless individuals who suffer from major mental illnesses, and United Active Living at Garrison Green who aims to transform the experience of ageing. As a result of these workshops we were pleased to present two exhibitions at This is My City Festival 2016 (TMC), in collaboration with The New Gallery (TNG), United Active Living and TMC featuring the masks of the four participating organizations - over 150,000 viewers saw these exhibits. Participants and project leaders also presented talks, performances and led a mask making workshop at the Puppet Power: Connecting Generations Conference.
View from the Inside resonated in the community and over ten agencies across Alberta have expressed interest in the program. Donate today on Canada Helps so we can continue this program and help those with mental wellness challenges!
"Thank you WP Puppet Theatre, for bringing this fantastic art based program into my life. I'm more alive and aware of new stuff inside of me that I didn't know was there before". - View Participant
One person in every four will be affected by a mental disorder at some stage of life. Emerging research suggests that creative arts therapies and experiences can help to reduce anxiety and increase self-esteem and quality of life. The Courage Journey Workshops give participants the opportunity to bring to light their experiences of challenge and resiliency through art making, storytelling, drama and movement, live puppetry performance and media technologies.
While the individuals who participate in the program may face many barriers including homelessness, learning delays, and isolation; a common thread that binds us all together is the essential experience and fluid nature, the highs and lows, of mental wellness. Participants will explore their creativity, problem solving skills and stories of hope.
Your donation not only helps W.P. Puppet Theatre Society accomplish its goals but also the goals and needs of other organizations! Please donate today!
