What’s Happening For GivingTuesday 2014


There are special GivingTuesday activities happening at the National level as well as in communities across the country. Find out what’s happening in your location for GivingTuesday!


Mobile Giving Foundation Canada is once again offering fee-free text-to-donate campaign keywords to MGFC-approved & GivingTuesday partner charities. This month, 30+ charities have initiated campaign keywords for GivingTuesday and 15 are already live as of November 11. In 2013 there were a total of 31 campaigns, contributing to a whopping 178% increase in text donations in the first week of December 2013!

Ipsos Canada, a founding partner in GivingTuesday, will offer all employees paid time off to volunteer to support local charities on December 2. Employee teams are identifying charities they will support in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Guelph, Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver.

Greedy Giver is challenging Canadians to each raise $250 for a cause they care about by offering to do acts of kindness as a crowdfunding reward with the GivingTuesday Challenge.

Interac matching program: on GivingTuesday, December 2nd, 2014, Acxsys Corporation (the architects of the Interac network) will match online charitable donations made through CanadaHelps.org and paid using Interac Online, up to $25 per donation and a maximum total of $10,000 in matching dollars.

Canadian Blood Services @itsinyoutogive is using online donations, the #UNselfie and a text to donate campaign to raise funds and awareness for the National Public Cord Blood Bank, providing stem cells to Canadian patients in need of a life-saving transplant.

Save the Children Canada this Giving Tuesday will be promoting the Christmas Jumper Campaign. Families, friends, co-workers are invited to gather, wear a fun sweater, and donate $5 or more to Save the Children to make the world better with a sweater.

Raising the Roof is launching the national Toque Campaign on Giving Tuesday, with a goal of 40,000 toques (and this year, socks too!) across Canada, raising $400,000 for long term solutions to homelessness. The campaign runs for two months, ending on Toque Tuesday – February 3rd, 2015. They are also partnering with Paul Davis Systems and The West Neighborhood House to work with at risk youth on a collaborative painting job. Any interested press looking to take photos at the event or get an interview are encouraged to visit Artscape Youngplace, 180 Shaw Street on December 2 between 10:00 am 12:00 pm.

Habitat for Humanity is encouraging donors to help Canadian families in housing need, by texting the word “HOMES to 20222” to donate $5, $10, $20 or $25.

Free The Children is challenging you to help families overseas. Every $50 donation provides a goat—a source of milk, income and independence for a family saving to send their children to school and plan for the future. Hear their story from Andy the Goat.


Meals On Wheels Fredricton is launching a drive to recruit new volunteers with opportunities for drivers, community outreach, social media and other areas of expertise.

Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia and Deloitte are teaming up with a $5,000 match on December 2, as well as leading the charge for a Twitter chat #givingNS and a proclamation from Halifax City Council

Food Banks – Banques Alimentaires du Quebec is launching the Mardi Je Donne challenge, asking Quebecers to donate food items or volunteer time in one of 18 food banks across the province as well as share their generosity socially with an #UNselfie.

The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, benefitting the Segal Cancer Centre at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal is kick-starting fundraising for the 2015 Ride with GivingTuesday incentives! Riders who increase their fundraising by $500 by December 2nd receive a free Ride tuque, and those who bring in half of their fundraising minimum by December 31st are invited to our Spring Mixer event and are entered into a draw for one of 5 pairs of Oakley glasses!


Timeraiser in Toronto is hosting an art show this #GivingTuesdayCa, featuring past Timeraiser art and inviting nonprofits to meet and network with people looking to connect with a nonprofit this Giving Tuesday. The evening will include one work of art that people can bid on with volunteer hours and the goal is to raise 100 hours!

Guelph Gives: modeled after the Bmore Gives More campaign, the GuelphGives team is planning a city-wide GivingTuesday celebration, with a goal to raise $1 million for local causes. There is a giving fair planned for multiple locations on December 2nd that will engage the entire Guelph community. Will Guelph claim the title of Canada's most generous city?!

Borealis Grille and Bar, Guelph: servers will donate half of their tips on December 2nd and Borealis will match that amount, doubling the donation. The proceeds will go to the Adopt-a-Family Program at The Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington.

Windfall Basics in Toronto is launching a #WinterBasicsDrive to collect NEW kid's winter coats, boots, toques, mittens, warm/wool socks, etc...) to help keep kids warm this holiday season, in conjunction with an #UNselfie and text GTBASICS to donate $20.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul London: will be hosting a movie screening of ELF at King's University College campus in London, Ontario where admission is on the basis of donation. Monetary or clothing donations will benefit those in the London community.

Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge is inviting the community to a "No Gala-Gala” on Tuesday, December 2, 4:30 p.m.-7:30p.m., at The Venue, 286 George Street: “come as you are” - no fancy dress required or pricey admission.

Sarnia-Lambton Gives, a collaboration of 26 charities, is raising money through a common text to donate campaign and staging several PR events across the city on December 2: a photo opp at City Hall, a press event at Lambton College, a flash mob at the Lambton Mall and finally to the movie theatre that evening.

Owen Sound Hunger and Relief Effort (OSHaRE) is hosting an Open House from 1 to 4 pm on December 2, inviting the community to come for a tour, bring a food or financial donation and enjoy homemade pies, coffee and tea (890 4th Ave. E., Owen Sound)

PeaceWorks Technology Solutions, Waterloo is giving staff a half day of paid work time to volunteer at the Cambridge Food Bank, and holding an office food drive supporting people and community groups in need.

Factory Theatre, Toronto is launching the Alumni Green Room #UNselfie campaign, a match of up to $10,00 for donations received on December 2, and holding an interactive theatre reception for artists, staff, donors and supporters (by invitation).

University of Toronto Children of Hope Uganda (COHU) Club is having a Giving Tuesday campaign sale on December 1st, at Sidney Smith Building (100 St. George Street), 10am-4pm.  The Club has already raised over $600 selling beautiful handmade paper bead jewelry, stuffed animals, baskets and crafts made by the caregivers of the orphans in Uganda, to support the nursery and vocational school built by COHU.

CanAssist African Relief in Kingston announces a matching donation program for December 1,2 or 3 (up to $400 per donor and total of $10,000), funding infrastructure work in East Africa.


TREC Education Toronto is holding an Eco-Trivia Pub Night on Dec 2 at The Firkin on King. Create a team (or get matched) and test your brain about eco-related topics. Come on out and help support renewable energy education programs.


Toronto Arts Foundation supports emerging artists by offering awards to help them not only continue their work, but to give them the recognition they deserve. Covenant House Toronto is holding their annual TTC coin drive, seeking donations at many downtown subway locations (e.g., St. Andrew, King, Bloor). Media and the public are invited to meet December 2, 8:30am at the Bloor stop and join in the #UNselfie photo fun.


Healthy Start for Mom and Me in Winnipeg is running a text to donate campaign to raise $10,000 for their Meal Bags program: ready-to-cook ingredients and a recipe in a bag to feed 4 to 6 people, available for $1.50 to make at home.

Canadian Lutheran World Relief in Winnipeg are calling December 2 “Giving School-Day”. Their goal is to raise $20,000 to build classrooms and fill them with desks, books, blackboards and other necessary school supplies for refugee children in Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.


#GivingTuesdayYYC is a civic movement of Calgary non-profits and businesses coming together through activities and social media  to showcase local non-profits & charities and inspire people in Calgary to give. on Dec. 2nd.

The Ball Is Round, Calgary is looking to raise $1000 in order to be able to equip three school groups with soccer equipment to be distributed to school communities in Peru, Ecuador and Guatemala in 2015.

Dress for Success Calgary is celebrating #GivingShoesDay, encouraging #shoegooder women to donate their professional shoes to one of more than 135 Dress for Success affiliates across the world—including Dress for Success Calgary.

Edmonton Community Foundation is launching the Young Edmonton Grants (YEG) 3:1 matching program, matching up to $100,000 in donations at a rate of 3:1 until December 31st. The YEG program is initiated, led, and organized by young Edmonton and area residents.

Victoria Foundation is planning an #UNselfie photo contest with two $500 prizes to be donated to the winner’s charity of choice. This is a repeat of last year's photo contest, which benefitted TRAC Tenant Resource and Advisory Centre in Victoria.

Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Community Services is partnering with a local business, Haney Sewing & Sound, to distribute 10,000 bookmarks to raise awareness for their services and impact in the community.

Surrey Christian School in Surrey is launching Imagine Giving, with a goal to raise $75,000 for a new 24 passenger bus and 26 iPads for our primary students to share!  On Dec 2, members of the community can drop by for refreshments all day, and get their #UNselfie photo taken for social media streams.

John Howard Society of North Island, Campbell River BC is partnering with Healthyway Natural Foods Market, who is matching donations for GivingTuesday, up to $1000. All funds go to support the KidStart Mentoring Program.
