Decoda Literacy Foundation

Everyone in BC should have the literacy skills they need.

The reality is that adults often face barriers to learning. They may not have money for bus fare to attend a class. Or, they can’t afford to buy books or pay for babysitting. They may be going to class hungry.

This Giving Tuesday, please help learners like Sofia.*

Sofia worked in low paying jobs since arriving from Chile over 20 years ago. To find a better paying job, she needed to develop her digital literacy skills. Her challenge was she didn’t have access to a computer with the MS Office suite. The pandemic lockdown only made things worse.

The good news is Sofia got help from the PACE Community Access Fund. Her community literacy program applied for funds and purchased her the software. And, her tutor generously donated her old laptop. Sofia is on her way to achieving her goals.

Every year, Decoda receives funding applications from literacy programs that want to help remove barriers for learners with short-term needs. PACE can help one learner or many. Our current funding only allows us to distribute $15,000 – approximately 20 grants of $750.

This Giving Tuesday, please help us support more learners facing economic hardship – now made worse by the pandemic.

On behalf of learners like Sofia, thank you for giving the gift of literacy.
