Habitat for Humanity PEI

Habitat for Humanity PEI asks for your help to provide safe, decent, affordable homes to those who would not qualify for a conventional mortgage. Our home-ownership program is a long-term solution designed to combat the housing crisis and break the cycle of poverty.

Habitat for Humanity believes in giving a hand-up, not a hand-out. In addition to interest-free mortgage payments, each homeowner invests 500 hours of labour, called “sweat equity”, into the building their house and the houses of others.

Habitat for Humanity PEI aims to be sustainable in every sense of the word. Our homes are built to be energy efficient and environmentally responsible. Every interest-free mortgage payment made by our partner families gets re-invested into building future homes. The ReStore diverted approximately 250 tons of waste from landfills last year which in turn was resold to cover the operational costs of HFHPEI so that 100% of donations go directly to building homes for our partner families.

An independent study found that Habitat homeownership generates a societal return of $175,000 per partner family through increased tax revenue; reduced usage of social housing and food banks; and improved educational outcomes for children.

For every $1 spend on a Habitat home about $4 of benefits accrue to society.

Habitat families report high levels of well-being after moving into their homes and show improvement in areas of; increased employment stability, improved health behaviours, greater engagement in the community and society, and a better educational outlook for the second generation.

All donations of $10 or more are eligible for an official tax receipt, and donations received on or before December 31, 2015 will receive an official tax receipt for the 2015 year.

Donations can be made securely online through our website www.habitatpei.ca, by phone at 902-367-3559, in-person at our ReStore or by mail at 365 Mt. Edward Road, Charlottetown PE, C1E 2A1.
