Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television

As a member-based organization representing Canada’s screen-industry professionals, the Academy believes that our industry has a collective responsibility to contribute to equity and inclusion. Storytellers change hearts and minds, shaping the way we perceive both individual and shared experience, and the Academy is in the unique position to make sure diverse stories and perspectives are recognized by empowering creators to speak in their own voices. On Giving Tuesday, the Academy will be raising awareness for its newly launched Equity & Inclusion Fund, an action-plan which seeks to provide Black, Indigenous, people of colour, and under-represented industry professionals with increased visibility, accessibility, and recognition.

Among the most important facets of the Equity & Inclusion Fund is free anti-racism training sessions for all Academy members. Not only do our members play important roles within the screen industries (the majority holding positions as Executives and Producers), but they constitute the primary decision-making force in the outcome of the Canadian Screen Awards, this country’s largest annual celebration of excellence in on-screen storytelling. In providing a framework to apply anti-racist thought to their professional lives at all levels of the industry, we have the chance to not only affect the functioning of unconscious bias on set, in the boardroom, and in workplaces across the country, but to alter its outcome within the Canadian Screen Awards themselves.
