Arviat Film Society

The Arviat Film Society is a youth and student-driven non-profit organization, guided by educators and mentors in Arviat, Nunavut. The Society was founded in 2010 to support Inuit youth and students in the Canadian Arctic to explore education and careers in film and new media, communications, research, the skilled trades and technology. Our youth programming is made possible through the generous support of the Hamlet of Arviat, John Arnalukjuak High School and the Nunavut Research Institute Arviat Research Support Centre. Through programs like the Arviat Television Initiative, Nanisiniq Arviat History Project, The Arviat Community Greenhouse Project, Astronomy Mentorship Club, and Arviat Research Cafe Nights Inuit youth are able to learn about digital media literacy, while also building science, research and technology skills that can help prepare them to become future leaders and innovators in a rapidly developing Arctic. We also focus on incorporating youth engagement in community-based participatory action research projects aimed at improving the health of our very large youth population (currently 60% of Arviarmiut are under age 16).
