b current has been diversifyin' Canadian theatre since 1991. We work with artists of the Black diaspora and other people of colour to produce outside of the box performance pieces, ideas, workshops, and mainstage productions.

Our acclaimed rAiz'n the Sun Training Program ran from 1999-2014, providing mentorship and hands-on experiential training for dozens of emerging professional theatre practitioners including multiple Dora Mavor Moore Award winning actor Raven Dauda, NAACP Image Award winningtrey anthony ('Da Kink in My Hair), Dora Award nominated director Weyni Mengesha, G98.7’s radio personality Mark Strong, Dora Award winning poet and playwright d’bi youngand now Artistic Director Jajube Mandiela (Degrassi).

We are best known for our rock.paper.sistahz Festival of new works, which started in 2002, and many works have gone onto full productions at b current and elsewhere, including: Governor General Award Finalist Joseph Jomo Pierre's Born Ready, Joan Kivanda's Virgin, Tanya Pillay's All of Him, and Nicole Brooks' 2012 Dora Award nominated Obeah Opera, of which a new version premiered in Panamania 2015 (Arts & Cultural programming in the Pan American Games). In 2013 we launched afteRock Plays, a play series where artists co-produce mountings of their new works. From that play series, Sebastién Heins'Brotherhood: The Hip Hopera will tour across Canada and India in winter 2017.
