Downtown Eastside Women's Centre

The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre (DEWC) is one of the busiest women’s centres in the country, operating a low-barrier drop-in centre and emergency night shelter for women and children in the Downtown Eastside. We provide crucial safe, women-only space, respite from conditions of poverty and violence, basic necessities such as toiletries, clothing, laundry, phone and computer access, showers and bathrooms, as well as support services: advocacy, housing outreach, victim services, HIV case management, Chinese Seniors outreach, and cultural programming.

Our kitchen serves up to 500 meals every day, and demands are increasing rapidly, expounded by the housing crisis. We serve a high-needs population, including women who are homeless or with unstable housing, survivors of abuse and violence, and women with addictions, and for many of these women, lunch at DEWC is their only meal of the day. Our kitchen program is the heart of our drop-in centre and the first step for women accessing other resources and services.

Help us raise $370,000 to close the shortfall in our kitchen program!

Our kitchen program is fundamental in helping our staff build trusting relationships with women and connecting them to a continuum of care. With every donation of just $5, you are supporting a woman to access a hot meal; safe and clean shower; clothes a place of safety from the street; and in obtaining support to find housing, getting a treatment bed, or victim services. Your contributions are essential to women accessing not only resources and the help they require, but to an empowering community and the possibilities of long-term positive change.
