IISD Experimental Lakes Area

Many of Canada’s freshwater systems are showing signs of stress and abuse from human activities, creating a need for a clear understanding of possible solutions to these problems. Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) researchers have the opportunity to undertake whole-ecosystem experiments where entire lakes or watersheds are manipulated, over long periods of time, yielding unique real-world results that have been driven environmental policy in Canada and around the world.
However, as IISD-ELA shifts from a federally-run facility to a charitable one, the core operations and science will require considerable funding and public support to maintain and continue its history of influential and unique whole-ecosystem research. We regard ELA as a precious scientific asset to be protected for future generations.
