Nanaimo Art Gallery

Invest in the Culture of our Community: Volunteer, Donate, Join as Member & Participate!

Nanaimo Art Gallery is a welcoming community space for encounters with art in many different forms. It is a place for experimentation, learning, creativity, and building connections. It is a refuge, a place to feel inspired and challenged...and our public art gallery belongs to you!

Excellent and relevant exhibitions and dynamic public programs explore ideas through art, both inside the Gallery and at locations across our region. Admission is by donation, so you can visit the Gallery often and bring your friends along. We connect with over 12,000 elementary students each year through TD Artists in the Schools, and operate The Gallery Store which features high-quality, locally made objects, and contributes to the livelihood of artists.

Like much of downtown Nanaimo, the Gallery is moving through a process of renewal and growth. The arts and culture sector is key to the economic development of Nanaimo, providing employment and attracting tourists and locals downtown, which translates to increased dollars spent on accommodation, restaurants, bars, transportation and shopping. The Gallery also contributes to a sense of community pride and belonging. Excellent cultural infrastructure is important to our quality of life—the City of Nanaimo's Cultural Plan for a Creative Nanaimo, which was created collaboratively and infused with diverse input, identifies the Art Gallery as a priority for development. In 2014, we launched Art Lab and improved our public exhibition space. Earlier this year we left our location on the campus of Vancouver Island University to amalgamate downtown. Currently, we are upgrading exhibition lighting to make our space more flexible for artists and more inviting for audiences.

We know our community values the contribution Nanaimo Art Gallery makes to the cultural, social and economic fabric of our region and we greatly appreciate the support you have demonstrated along the way. Although the City and other partners are generous, we still need community contributions and support to realize our programs. We need you to join us in achieving our goal of creating a world class cultural resource for our region. We are passionate about supporting artists and creative practice, contributing to a vibrant and healthy community, and creating inspiring and challenging experiences with art for diverse audiences—and we are asking for your help! Please put your support into action by joining the Gallery as a member, making a donation, and participating. We appreciate your investment in the culture of our community!
