Parkdale Project Read

Speak Out. Read Together. Write Freely. Rise Up!
@ParkdaleProjectRead joins the global #GivingTuesday movement!

This year your #GivingTuesday generosity means more than ever.

Parkdale Project Read is a community-based literacy organization that supports adults in learning to read, write, and develop basic math and computer skills. We support over 130 youth, adults and their families each year to meet learning goals such as accessing employment and training programs, establishing independence, and transitioning to college and university. We have been doing this work, building our community of learners, for 34 years.

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected our community of adult learners. In addition to economic hardship, social distancing has created barriers for learners, disconnecting them from their supports and community. Many learners do not have ready access to the technology and digital media skills that have become essential to keeping informed and socially connected, impeding their access to learning opportunities and crucial social, health and economic supports.

In response to the challenges of the pandemic’s effects, Parkdale Project Read has been working to support our learners to navigate these barriers. Providing emergency food support, adapting our programming and moving literacy classes online, and mitigating the mental health effects of social isolation by connecting virtually are just some of the ways we support our learners. To continue these efforts, we need your help.

Your #GivingTuesday donations will help make our remote learning opportunities accessible to more learners and will support the PPR community generally in this challenging year. Your donations will go toward the following:

  • Remote/digital learning tools and resources to enable learners to access our online learning groups. Ten donations of $50 will purchase one refurbished computer for a learner.
  • COVID kits that include hand sanitizers, masks, and anti-bacterial wipes.  A $25 donation provides one COVID kit.
  • Winter accessories (gloves, hats, scarves, etc.) A $25 donation will buy winter accessories for one learner for the whole season.
  • Grocery Food cards to provide healthy food and other necessities.  A $100 donation will support one learner’s family for a week.

Here is how to make your donation:

1. Make a #GivingTuesday donation to PPR on Tuesday December 1st,  2020.

2. Make a secure online donation on our CanadaHelps page, available throughout the year.  Please send your donation before December 31st to receive a tax receipt for 2020.

3. Mail a cheque to: Parkdale Project Read,1209 King Street West, Unit #2Toronto, Ontario M6K 1G2

We welcome all donation amounts and can provide tax receipts for those over $20.00

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of adult literacy learners in this difficult time.
