Social Planning Council of Ottawa

Help an isolated senior participate in activities in their community!

The Social Planning Council of Ottawa works with grassroots groups and community agencies across Ottawa to research and address issues facing residents of Ottawa.

This year your donation will support the hard work of 21 grassroots Seniors Groups who support over 1,600 seniors with very few resources.

You may already know that seniors are at risk of being lonely and isolated which can lead to (
  • Depression
  • Increased chance of premature death
  • Disability from chronic diseases
  • Poor mental health
  • Increased use of health and support services
  • Reduced quality of life
  • Caregiver burden
  • Poor general health

On top of that now imagine being a senior who just immigrated to Canada, or someone who speaks little English or French, or having few friends or family members for support and company, or trying to adjust to a new culture as a senior, or trying to figure out where to get medical help, or having an illness or limited mobility, or little income. These things can make the world a very lonely place for a senior.

This is where our Volunteer Seniors Groups come in! They're volunteer groups of seniors who work in their own communities to reach out to isolated seniors and invite them to social activities. At these activities they meet new friends, they participate in fun and meaningful activities and they learn where to go when they need help. These groups do all of this with very few resources, many of them giving hours and hours of their time and their own money.

Your donation will go to help our seniors groups participate in a variety of activities such as:
  • Dance classes
  • Social gatherings
  • Fitness classes
  • Events
