Impossible Polls

It’s estimated that the average adult makes 35,000 decisions in a day. With so many decisions to make, it has become common for people to use social media as a way to get help on the decisions they are struggling with. This approach has become so standard that all the major social platforms now have built-in poll mechanisms allowing people to easily seek advice on things like the cabinet finish they should go with, the hair style they should get, or even the outfit they should wear.

To provide some perspective around the holidays, we used these polls to demonstrate the seemingly impossible decisions that people experiencing poverty are forced to make every day. Over 40,000 households in the HRM are spending more than 30% of their income on housing. And when someone doesn’t have safe and stable housing their need for additional support tends to snowball, resulting in some very tough decisions. Imagine having to choose between buying gifts for your family and being able to afford groceries, or between having a place to live and feeling safe.

A donation to United Way Halifax will provide crucial support to those faced with the toughest decisions this holiday season.
