Women's Rural Resource Centre


Did you know that, in Canada, 1 in 3 women will experience gender-based violence? Consider the women in your life. Gender-based violence will impact their story. For over 20 years, Women’s Rural Resource Centre (WRRC) has been working with women, children and families impacted by abuse in Middlesex County. Our vision is to end this epidemic. Last year with your help, we were able to support 56 women and 19 children in our shelter alone; through our community programs over 111 children worked with our team to understand that abuse is not their fault; and over 100 women have accessed our support team to walk with them in their healing journey. In each of us, there is an underlying need for human connection. WRRC has launched a new initiative that creates opportunity to build healthy relationships between citizens who want to help, and women who are changing the story in their lives. This is new and exciting work! One part of the program is a group called Getting Ahead. Tanya is one of our first participants and has this to share: When I came into shelter, I was really emotionally unstable. I needed to be able to talk to someone around the clock. The services and scope of WRRC far exceeds what is offered through other services. With my WRRC counsellor's help I was able to get the emotional help I needed to keep my focus on moving forward. Through my connections in the Getting Ahead group, I was able to find affordable housing. There's something empowering about sitting in a group of women whose experiences are similar to mine; we start to build relationships, and start trusting people again. Getting Ahead empowered me to trust the relationships and resources of someone I trust to help me reach my goals for myself.
